Fitness Tips for Busy Folks
(or folks who just don’t feel like working out)
Fitness can be a total blast, and the feeling you get when you’ve finished a good workout is amazing! You’re full of energy and ready to take on the world. That workout high is what encourages many of us to work out each day*.
HOWEVER, sometimes you hit a wall and working out sounds about as delightful as cleaning out the garage, or doing the laundry - it feels like a chore. We are all familiar with that nagging feeling that tells us to get on the treadmill or to pop over to the 6 pm yoga class. Sometimes we listen and do our daily workout, and sometimes we tell it to put a sock in it and binge watch reality TV. Either way, there is a balance between finding time for fitness and finding time to relax and chill.
First and most importantly, find a workout routine you enjoy doing. Some people love to run, some love to lift. Other folks like practicing yoga after a long day of work. It helps them to relax and maintain health all at the same time! Finding your perfect fitness activity will help keep you motivated and going strong for the long-haul.
If you prefer to work out at a gym, heading over early, before work may be the best bet. First off, you can mark it off of your list of things to do for the day. But, the best part is that it helps you sustain energy for the day. A good workout in the morning helps create positive hormones and endorphins which help keep you moving in a good direction for the day.
If you don’t really like working out in front of other people, or if you simply prefer the quiet and privacy of home, invest in a good treadmill or elliptical machine and hop on when it’s most convenient for you. Another home workout option is to throw in an exercise DVD or stream a good yoga or pilates class.
Perhaps one of the best ways for mind and body to wind down from a long day at work, is to go for a walk outside. Head to a favorite park, walk your neighborhood, or find a good hiking trail - and thankfully, this is the perfect time of year to enjoy the great outdoors!
We may be a bit biased, but we personally think cycling is the perfect activity! It gives you an amazing cardio workout all while getting you outside, enjoying your surroundings and soaking up the beauty of the great outdoors. And it’s a great exercise you can do with the entire family.
Maybe you’d enjoy doing a combination of activities to eliminate the possibility of burn-out. One week do yoga, another week enjoy a nice walk every day, then go back to yoga or try another activity. Your heart, mind and body will thank you for your persistence.
